      eden‘s shadow
A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in— what more could he ask?
A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.

      — Victor Hugo, Les misérables

      Introduction ___________
Dreams of eden has grown into an almost over-night phenomenon in the gaming world.
The immersive new addition of the Otome Game Genre was capturing the hearts of many young players all over the globe. It had a strong-willed protagonist, that broke out of the typical damsel in distress image, and dark and broody love interests, that delivered not only corny romantic one liners, but also whole political intrigues with demanded strategic involvement of the players. Just to name a few of the many beloved mechanics eden had to offer.

A and B were also absolutely obsessed with the game. In a world that bombarded them on the daily with ungrateful tasks, awful work environments and the constant pressure of society and their families, Dreams of Eden was a refuge for their troubled minds.
They followed with great anticipation every update, every new announcement and were constantly looking for new fanarts or fanfictions. They really desperately wanted to be a part of this magical world full of wonders… but neither of them exactly imagined having to die for it. Both of them died approximately around the same time and awoke together in completely foreign bodies in a strange place, that might have looked a little familiar. But was definitely none of their little apartments.

It took them a while to realize that they have been reincarnated into the Dreams of eden universe as the non playable sidekicks of the antagonist. This sparked undeniable excitement for the diehard fans, but also a little terror. They just somehow survived death, but none of them were particularly safe in this environment. Will they manage to keep calm while meeting their idols, don‘t make any unforgivable mistakes in public and survive their time at the academy?

That promised to be a gaming experience they‘ve never had before.

    • Name: Hamasaki Kyoko Ophelia Therese of Oblagorsk
      Age: 19 y/o
      Height: 168 cm

      Original In-Game role:
Ophelia was a fairly unimportant NPC. She appeared in several scenes during Phoebos‘ romance route. As his sister she spied on the soon-to-be couple and helped the antagonist sabotage their dates. Although in almost all the routes she gets slumped together with the other mean girls and banned from the academy (just like high society in general). She doesn‘t have a lot of known character traits aside from being extremely whiney and having an awful brother-complex.

      Trivia:
      - Ophelia inherited originally the same magical ability that has run through her family for generations: emotional manipulation. A trait that seemed to have completely vanished after the incident where she suddenly lost her memory. Instead she now possesses the power to enter freely into other peoples dreams as soon as she falls asleep and has the ability to manipulate the dream realm completely to her personal wish. Something she doesn‘t even associate with magic, doesn‘t know she does it and also drains so much of her energy source and wastes a whole night spend in consciousness that she basically misses to actually sleep.
      - Living as Kyoko, she has always enjoyed drawing. She was a more or less known fan-artist for Dreams of eden and it is a hobby she proceeded attempting after her awakening as Ophelia. Again this came as a massive surprise for her family. The OG Ophelia was never calm or quiet enough to indulge herself in sich a conscious and patient activity. But they weren‘t complaining either.
      - During her active life as Kyoko she was mostly infatuated with Phoebos of Oblagorsk. He was her favorite character, the one she has drawn the most pictures of and the one she read about the most. Her friends jokingly called him Kyokos husband… How cruel was fate that she reincarnated as his sister. Especially since it really didn‘t take much time for them two to completely behave like siblings. There was no attraction left in her, she was disillusioned from her prince in shining armor and simply saw in him now… her brother.

    • Name: Seiji Ootani | Evelyn "Eve" Algernon (Lady Algernon)
      Age: 18 years old
      Height: 176cm | 164cm

Original In-Game role: Evelyn, alongside Ophelia, used to be one of the faceless NPC sidekicks of Dreams of Eden's antagonist. Her initial role consisted entirely of making the main characters' every day at the academy a living hell, initially by just sabotaging her dates with the others and later on by, seemingly, roping her offscreen fiancé, a man with a title above her own, into pulling some strings, resulting in the protagonist being uninvited or outright banned from a few events in the latter half of the year. In the end, Eve suffers the same fate as those that kept her around: Expelled from the academy, ousted by the high society she was part of and her engagement broken off. Not much is known about her aside from that, other than that she seems to be an only child, as well as a rather delicate person, with a tongue of gold and a sharp mind, but much too anxious to act on it at times - unless someone backs her up, of course.

      Trivia:
      - Seiji was, last he checked, a man. Dying is one thing but waking up as a woman another - he can't say he's thrilled about his circumstances, considering everything, but in hindsight, it could always be worse than it is. Ironically enough, Seiji still lacks the spacial awareness and decorum of the actual Evelyn, leaving many a person confused by 'her' antics and mannerisms.
      - Evelyn's magic was never revealed ingame and only ever teased in text blurbs, hinting at some sort of underlying power. Regardless, there simply was no need for her to use any sort of ability: Her golden tongue simply talked her and her companions out of any mishap they might have found themselves in at any given point. All that still only amounts to one thing: What in Eden's name is Eve's magical ability? It seems that even Seiji will never find out, as he has developed one of his own in this new body instead: Chlorokinesis. Right now, he doesn't even know how to control something like that, but he hears individual blades of grass whisper to him at times and it drives him nuts.
      - Initially not interested in Dreams of Eden as a whole, Seiji fell in love with the game seemingly at random and became a die-hard fan. When asked about his favorite love interest, he's prone to pull up a chart he made himself, color-coded and accessible to members of a specific fan forum for the game, where he - batshit insane as he can be - explains not only how the game's mechanics, the characters relationships' and certain other works by the same company play a role in what makes the games world feel so alive, but raves on about just how messed up it is that his favorite character, a young knight that rescues the protagonist during the prologue and clicks with her immediately, barely appears at all for the rest of the game. Sentinel Gherasim deserves better, damnit!

      Appearance:

Looking back, it maybe is like the toy carts you rode when you were a kid. But those toy carts could never go beyond the walls of the lawn. We want to follow the rugged concrete road beyond the wall. As we've grown, we've decided to leave behind the toy cart.
    • Name: Phoebos Edowyn of Oblagorsk
      Age: 22 y/o
      Height: 184 cm

      Original In-Game-role:
Phoebos is one of the main love interests in the protagonists harem of men. He is a man that carries himself with significance and a tinge of arrogance. Enrolling into the academy as a politician to be he follows strictly his family‘s path that has been laid out to him. With his ability to quite literally manipulate other peoples emotions by controlling their dopamine system he is extremely dangerous. The Oblagorsk are kind of said to be the advisors of very strong kings or soon to be dogs in the streets. They are said to be knifes too sharp for most. That‘s why it‘s almost become a game, an act of asserting dominance to keep an Oblagorsk nearby.
That was a very crucial plot point in his romantic route. The protagonist used his reputation to gain respect and equally had to fight over dominance with Phoebos at every step. Their romance was passionate, destructive and deliciously dangerous which made him a fan favorite of many. His mysterious aura drew admirers in like moths to the flame.

      Trivia:
      - It is very confusing for a child to be a quite literal drug for others. Before he was able to control his powers he accidentally used it all over the place on people interacting with him. Activating the brains reward system felt to him like getting rid of something slightly bothering him. A motion that was as insignificant as removing a little twig from your coat. But the effect on others was very apparent. People became obsessed with him, maids tried to kidnap him, he was offered money, sex, everything anyone might have desired. He felt betrayed by every one of them. Every time he felt as if someone started liking him - truly him, just for the sake of it - they turned out to be addicted in the blink of an eye. That really messed up his mind. A side effect most of his family had to suffer eventually.
      - To his own surprise he did develop a somehow interesting relationship with his sister after her accident. It has been a massive scandal, the loss of her memory always meant way more for the Oblagorsk with their special powers. But she did not seem to behave destructive. Quite the opposite even. Their family watched their daughter become a happy pawn. Something about her suddenly simple mind was… soothing. Phoebos was confused beyond reason when she began actively scolding him and reacting harshly to his antics. And not just that, his powers didn‘t seem to work on her either! Something was wrong. But so deliciously and wonderfully wrong that he… didn‘t bother telling anyone of the suspicions he had of her and her friend. Why change a running system?
      - He is very fond of music, but himself absolutely incompetent with an instrument. He tried mastering the piano just as the lute and the violin and every attempt was worse than the one before. He is simply tone death it seems. Something he does not wish to be teased about.

    • Name: Marlowe de Savoie
      Age: 20 years old
      Height: 173cm

Original In-Game role: Marlowe is Garden of Eden's beloved protagonist. At her every beck and call, at the very least in post-game promotional material, stands a harem of men that want to be hers, each wrapped tightly around a capable finger, with a heavy iron chain binding them to her like they forged a contract with some sort of devil, instead of a marriage certificate. But that's not where her story starts - Marlowe was born as the youngest of three in the De Savoie household, a fallen noble house that once had close ties to the king, their men and women both a mainstay of the best units of the imperial army, if they so wished. Unlike her much older brothers, gifted with their fathers ability of to form contracts with beasts, both mortal and mythical and borrow their magic for themselves, she seemed to have simply not inherited anything at all: No parental love, no magical ability and no foreboding prophesy to save their ailing country from certain doom. Even still, her family kept their mouths shut, their secret under lock and key and awarded Marlowe with the best education their dwindling funds could buy, but also a spot in the Academy, where it soon became obvious to any player that Marlowe was certainly not an average noble girl and most definitely not some sort of blundering fool, either.

      Trivia:
      - What little servants and staff her parents could afford mostly raised her, making Marlowe an incredibly hard worker - she isn't scared of breaking off a nail, or a finger, or even a hand or an arm - and that already sets her apart of most noble ladies her age, who do nothing but undermine themselves by seeing themselves as nothing more than someone's ideal marriage material. Marlowe despises it and, if the situation allows it, does her best to combat any sort of that behavior by pointing out mans flaws. Something that is quite easy when she's being surrounded by the entirety of her class: The military branch of the academy is home to the most stupid of men.
      - Originally Marlowe discovers she is capable of wielding magic as well midway through the story and certain events, depending on the route the players picks for her. As fate would want it, her power is much the same as her family, but the means of it different - her magic lets her contract fellow people, command them like pawns or use their magic herself, making her the queen on the chessboard of life. This, at least during the original storyline, makes her even more of a force to be reckoned with and the hero her brothers should be, quelling one conflict after another in a multitude of endings. It remains unclear if anything has changed, however.
      - A no nonsense person by heart, she is far from coy or willing to hide her intentions - if something bothers her, she is quick to point it out, eager to dissolve any sort of conflict (be it with fists or swords) as quickly as possible, be it political or interpersonal. If only she cared as much about her appearance as she cared about those things - Marlowe isn't perfect, she hardly knows anything outside the arts of war and her studies and 'leisure' has been crossed out of her inner dictionary. No wonder she hardly ever smiles - that uses energy that is best conserved instead, just like hollow pleasantries. People need to be whipped into shape to be of any use at all these days, overly relying on their magic - what a sad bunch of clowns.

      Appearance:

Looking back, it maybe is like the toy carts you rode when you were a kid. But those toy carts could never go beyond the walls of the lawn. We want to follow the rugged concrete road beyond the wall. As we've grown, we've decided to leave behind the toy cart.
    • Name: Marinus Finch
      Age: 21 y/o
      Height: 195 cm

      Original in Game role:
Marinus has been an unconventional love interest but certainly a very popular one. He has one of the most dramatic background stories as an illegitimate bastard of the king he‘s been a peasant all his life who had to have his magical abilities sealed so he wouldn‘t expose his majesty. So he himself is a dirty ugly secret running around under the eyes of the aristocracy. His mother unfortunately completely lost her mind under the whole situation. She felt betrayed, hadn‘t the king promised her love and a position in the palace? A swine, he broke off his promise and there was no better person to give the responsibility for her misery than the bastard son that looked like the king‘s twin in younger years.
In the game he is a butler at the academy, assigned to different noble students who demanded him. At first he stayed close to the antagonist for a while until his sympathies for Marlowe grew, who didn‘t seem that much better off than himself. And as he later found out about her abilities she became his chance to finally expose the king. With a contract and one of Marlowes leashes he‘d be finally able to break the seal and revealing his magic, that was undeniable proof of the kings blood line. He became obsessive quickly, unstable, jealous and anxious and the fans loved him dearly for all those cute little… quirks. They were sure they could just fix him.

      Trivia:
      - Marinus is not a man of many words. He bites his tongue to not get in trouble, since he‘d gladly throw around his poisonous tongue left and right. He does relax and speaks a little more openly when indulging in the riches delights. He became a brilliant rogue, stealing everything he desires from the people he serves. His favorites are expensive alcohol and anything he gets to smoke. That‘s why he likes serving students from the far east the most.
      - His seal is a massive spell branded under his skin across half of his back. He is not afraid to show off his scars and regularly gets in trouble for indecencies. Well, he gets in trouble all the time anyways, it‘s not like he cares at all, no matter the punishment.
      - Simply out of spite he is known to be a great ally for the rebellion that‘s been cooking out of sight and out of mind of the nobility. Whoever displays any heretic energy towards the king is quickly to gain his favor.

      Appearance:

I‘d have given you my soul had you asked.
So why did you have to take my heart instead?
    • Name: Auguste Olivier of Vilhardin II
      Age: 21 years old
      Height: 185cm

Original In-Game role: Auguste is another one of the love interests in the protagonists harem. Always smiling, ever the jokester, he's the first of the three love interests to get to know Marlowe, acting as the sole familiar face at the academy for the protagonist and as a constant annoyance to the player, as a sort of 'tutorial' character at times. Beneath that, Auguste is a simple noble, following in his fathers footsteps and studying for remedies to all sorts of ailments, fitting his families gift of magic - boneweaving. While incapable of healing surface injuries and gashes, anything that has to deal with the flesh, his family weaves bones back together like they are baskets made of straw. They can mend any break in a matter of seconds to minutes, or deform bones as needed. Just conjuring any of them up, should they go missing out of nowhere, is something that Auguste can't reliably do, but he can always steal someone elses for that!
In his romance route, he mainly functions as a healer for Marlowe, as well as an aide, an advisor, trying to win both her heart and the crown for her, happy to follow her wherever she might want to go, be it the kings castle, to crush the monarch underfoot, or retire in a sleepy mountain village and have a family - Auguste is an almost cliche option, but a loving one. No wonder he always ranks last in fanpolls.

      Trivia:
      - Auguste never complains about anything Marlowe does, from skipping an etiquette class to beating up some snob to actually usurping the crown in one of his (or anothers) endings, where he not only makes quick work of some of her enemies, but proves himself to be much more sinsiter and capable than his tailwagging puppy persona lets on. Thankfully, though, those moments seem fairly shortlived.
      - Whenever he finds himself stressed, he finds himself baking. His sweets are said to be delightful, but a vice of his own as well - he'll have one, then another, and afterward a third and suddenly, the entire plate he baked for friends (or Marlowe) vanishes in the blink of an eye. This, too, earns him Marlowes ire at times - his lack of selfdiscipline at times is fairly astounding, he'd definitely not make the best father.
      - The Vilhardin family is known in the realms as one of the most accomplished in the medical field and works closely with commoners, who are well acquainted with their children from an early age on. This, very frequently, not only causes them to be ever so slightly lacking in etiquette amongst their royal peers, but overly touchy and friendly as well, something that's ever so obvious when he interacts with anyone - even Marlowes other two lovers aren't save from his antics in their routes.
